How do WiFi antennas work?

WiFi has become increasingly important in our everyday lives and now plays a major part in both our personal and working environments. From computers and printers to smartphones and tablets, it is key to the successful operation of many businesses (as well as in being fundamental in most homes) that these devices can communicate with each other and WiFi has continued to play a bigger and bigger role, replacing the need for cumbersome and unnecessary cables.

Sometimes, having too many wireless devices or having devices spread over too wide an area can cause frustrating connectivity problems. This is why WiFi antennas can be so important.

What do WiFi antennas do?

WiFi uses radio waves at (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz) to transfer information without the need for cables. Although this is mostly a huge benefit, there can be some drawbacks, such as network interference or hardware limitations resulting in weak or complete loss of signal. This is where WiFi antennas come in, as they offer a way to pick up this information and send it on in a stronger signal.

How do WiFi antennas work?

Wireless antennas work by converting the information in these radio waves into electrical signals to be processed and converting these signals back in order to transmit the packets of information. The impact of a wireless antenna is largely determined by one thing - signal strength. This is ultimately what will make a difference to the quality of your WiFi network and the connectivity of all your devices. A wireless antenna with a strong signal will result in a smooth and stable connection.

How much difference do WiFi antennas really make?

Well placed, quality WiFi antennas can result in a significant increase in WiFi speed and signal strength. WiFi signals, like any radio waves, can suffer from interference from similar signals and can be blocked by walls, pipes or metallic surfaces, so choosing the right antenna as well as the best position can make all the difference.
